## Installation

### **I can’t set Smart Launcher as the default launcher**

This is not a Smart Launcher bug but a behavior set by your device manufacturer to try to “convince” you to use the built-in launcher again. If you, like us, think this is wrong, we encourage you to contact your device manufacturer and complain.

To find the solution to this problem, relative to your device, please check our "device-specific issues" section:

{% content-ref url="/pages/-LmFD-JI\_WDNokmjHe08" %}
[Device specific issues](/faq/common-issues/device-specific-issues)
{% endcontent-ref %}

### **Is Smart Launcher compatible with my device model?**

Yes, most probably! Smart Launcher supports devices that allow third-party launchers. However, some brands are more launcher-friendly than others. If you are looking for your next device and you want to use Smart Launcher on it, we suggest checking the list of device-specific issues.

Please note, Smart Launcher requires Google Play Services to work and verify licenses, so many Huawei and Honor devices released after 2019 are not officially compatible with Smart Launcher.

{% content-ref url="/pages/-LmFD-JI\_WDNokmjHe08" %}
[Device specific issues](/faq/common-issues/device-specific-issues)
{% endcontent-ref %}

### **I installed Smart Launcher but I don’t like it. How can I revert all the changes?**

Just uninstall Smart Launcher like any other app.

## Is Smart Launcher safe?

### My antivirus reports Smart Launcher contains viruses or malware. Should I be worried?

If you downloaded Smart Launcher from the Play Store there is nothing to worry about.

Some "cheap" antivirus algorithms work by reporting as malware anything that matches certain requirements, like a set of permissions. This causes many false positives and scares users into thinking the antivirus has some value. Apps like Android launchers require specific permissions to work, so they are often victims of this behavior.

Of course, you don't have to believe what we write here, we encourage you to repeat the scan using a different antivirus or check if other Android launchers are marked as malware by the same antivirus.

### I installed Smart Launcher using an APK downloaded from the web. Is it safe?

Short answer: No, we suggest uninstalling it and installing it from the Play Store. Installation files distributed by the Play Store are always protected with our signature.

Long answer: The APK is safe if it uses the same signature as our APKs that you can download from the Play Store (for example those offered for download on our website [here](https://www.smartlauncher.net/apk)). However, checking the APK signature is a task for tech-savvy users, so the best option remains installing Smart Launcher from the Play Store.

APKs that do not use our signature may be manipulated, maybe to remove security checks or to include dangerous code.

### **I see invasive ads while using Smart Launcher or other apps.**

Smart Launcher is completely ad-free. If you are experiencing this issue, you probably installed a malicious app that is showing advertising using popups while you normally use your phone.

{% hint style="info" %}
We suggest using an antivirus app to try to detect the app that is causing the problem or to uninstall apps that are not distributed by well-known developers.
{% endhint %}

### **While I was using my Huawei/Honor device, a message appeared saying “Your phone has just recovered from a serious error caused by Smart Launcher”. What does it mean?**

You should completely ignore that message, it’s just an attempt by the system to convince you to come back to the built-in launcher. That message appears after a simple crash or a freeze not necessarily caused by Smart Launcher itself. There is absolutely nothing to worry about it.

{% content-ref url="/pages/-LmFFFAXVIWAuaDvisRk" %}

## **Common issues**

###

### **The clock reports a wrong alarm time. I didn’t set any.**

At the moment we know that some Xiaomi devices, show completely wrong alarms, while some Samsung devices anticipate the next alarm of some minutes.

The problem doesn't depend on Smart Launcher, so we cannot fix it on our side. However, as a workaround, you can install and set your alarm using a different alarm app like the [Google clock app](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.deskclock).

{% content-ref url="/pages/-LmFD-JI\_WDNokmjHe08" %}
[Device specific issues](/faq/common-issues/device-specific-issues)
{% endcontent-ref %}

### My Google feed page is often blank or it doesn't work as expected

The Google feed works thanks to an experimental and not official plugin. Google never released a public API to integrate Google feed in 3rd party launchers like Smart Launcher, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee its working.

### **Smart Launcher displays everything in black and white. I can’t see colors anymore.**

Probably you accidentally enabled *Grayscale mode*. You can disable it from

{% hint style="info" %}
Preferences → Global Settings → *Grayscale mode*.
{% endhint %}

### **After using the double-tap to turn off the screen I cannot unlock my device using fingerprints**

Unfortunately, this issue depends on a system limitation. Android provides no way to programmatically turn off the screen. The only way to do it requires invoking a forced security lock or using some sort of workarounds. You can choose a different screen lock method in Preferences, Global Settings, Screen, **Screen lock method**.

### **I tried to add a shortcut to the home page but when I try to launch it a message says “The system doesn’t allow Smart Launcher to perform this action”.**

Sometimes, device manufacturers, limit some features to work only with their own apps. This happens especially with quick dial shortcuts. Unfortunately, Smart Launcher can’t circumvent this limit. Our suggestion is to install and use a different app to add the same shortcut.

### **Smart Launcher is continuously restarted**

Probably you are not experiencing a crash or a bug, it’s just your device firmware being that kills Smart Launcher in the background. There are various solutions to fix this issue, we suggest checking them here:

[**dontkillmyapp.com**](https://dontkillmyapp.com/)

### Problems with Smart Launcher gestures / The accessibility service is often malfunctioning causing **gestures like** screen off double tap to no longer work

In order to perform certain actions like expanding the notification panel or showing the recent apps screen, Smart Launcher needs to use an *Accessibility service* a special kind of Android service which allows an app to execute tasks usually limited by the OS.

However, it seems like Android sometimes cannot properly restart this service when necessary and this could lead to an annoying problem when Smart Launcher is constantly asking the user to enable the Accessibility service even if it should already be enabled in the system preferences.

Again, the cause is the Android battery optimization settings which will indiscriminately turn off services (like the Accessibility Service) even when not really necessary to save battery. To resolve this, **turn off battery optimization for Smart Launcher**.

Generally, you can access battery optimization settings from:

Settings -> Apps -> Manage Apps. Here you should look for Smart Launcher, the enter in the battery optimization settings.

However, the procedure is very variable depending on your device, check the link below to find the right procedure for you.

[**dontkillmyapp.com**](https://dontkillmyapp.com/)

### **I cannot enable gesture navigation or I'm experiencing issues related to it**

Check this section:

{% content-ref url="/pages/SROnVhx8BnGYglAyMduZ" %}
[Gestures](/faq/personalization/gestures)
{% endcontent-ref %}

### **I can see a persistent, floating icon on my home screen**

![](/files/u5PLGhT9cEd1XRZqnzgF)

If you see the icon above on your home screen, follow these steps to disable it.

**Settings -> Accessibility -> Installed Apps -> Smart Launcher Gestures -> Smart Launcher Gestures shortcut (turn off)**

### **Notifications badges do not work for certain apps**

Notifications are probably working just as expected, but Smart Launcher could exhibit a behavior different from your old launcher.

Some built-in launchers may show notification badges also after the relative notification has already been acknowledged. For example, if you receive a new message and you dismiss the relative notification, your device launcher could still show a badge reporting the new message.

Smart Launcher instead uses the official Android API and cleans the notification badges as soon as you read or dismiss the relative notifications. This method provides reliable data without requiring access to your phone or SMS history.

### **The notification count notifies the wrong count/doesn’t work as expected**

Smart Launcher uses Android APIs to get the number of new events for each app. Unfortunately, app developers very often don’t use all the features of this API as in the case of the notification count. In these situations, we can only try to guess the count. However, we’re continuously working to improve our notification count system and bug reports are welcome.

### After returning to the home screen from another app, Smart Launcher does not detect taps for a few moments

This is a known problem on some Android versions and firmware builds. Unfortunately, the problem does not depend on Smart Launcher and affects any third-party launcher. As much as we would like to solve the problem, there is nothing we can do on our side.

### How can I uninstall Smart Launcher?

Since Smart Launcher is an app, it can be uninstalled like any other Android app. You can follow any of the procedures below:

* On the [relative page](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ginlemon.flowerfree) on Play Store, press the "uninstall" button.
* From your device settings, search the "apps" section, find Smart Launcher and press "Uninstall". (this procedure can vary depending on your device model)
* Using another launcher, just uninstall Smart Launcher as you can do for any other app.

### Smart Launcher cannot be uninstalled

Probably Smart Launcher is still set as the default launcher and Android is preventing you from uninstalling it. In this case, please set a different launcher as default, then try again.

### **I have a question about lock screens.**

# What is Smart Launcher and how is it different from stock launchers?

Smart Launcher is a customizable Android launcher built around speed, clean organization, and flexible home screen design. Compared with many stock launchers, it gives you more control over how apps, widgets, and gestures work together.

In practice, that usually means faster access to apps thanks to categories and search, better layout freedom with free-form widgets and Icon Groups, and a setup that can be tailored to different styles, from minimal to feature-rich.

Smart Launcher is a strong fit if you want a cleaner daily workflow, easier one-handed navigation, or a home screen that feels more personal without sacrificing performance.

# Introduction

### Why should I use Smart Launcher instead of my stock launcher?

Smart Launcher offers several benefits over the stock launcher that comes with your device. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider using Smart Launcher:

#### **Better app management**

Your apps are automatically organized by categories, you can hide those you don’t need and protect them with a PIN code.

#### **Better home management**

You can use popup widgets, or organize multiple widgets together with the Widget Stack. You can set up gestures to launch your apps. Finally, Smart Launcher includes powerful built-in widgets, that will make your home screen more useful and interesting.

#### **More customization**

You can resize and rearrange your icons and widgets on your home screen without limits. Use custom fonts, Icon Groups, blur effects, and themes to make your home screen unique.

# How to set up Smart Launcher in 5 minutes

Use this quick flow if you want to start clean and get productive immediately.

1. Set Smart Launcher as default launcher.
2. Place your most-used apps on the home screen.
3. Add one useful widget (for example calendar, weather, or tasks).
4. Enable notification badges from `Preferences -> Home page -> Notifications`.
5. Try Smart Search for launching apps instead of scrolling through the full app list.
6. Keep the first layout simple for a few days, then refine it.
7. When you are satisfied with the setup, create a backup so you can restore it later.

Recommended first layout: `4-8` icons on the home screen plus `1` widget.

# How to migrate from other launchers

At the moment, direct backup import is supported for **Nova Launcher** backups.

To migrate from Nova:

1. Create your backup in Nova Launcher.
2. Open the backup screen in Smart Launcher.
3. Select restore/import and choose the Nova backup file.

Smart Launcher can import that file from the same screen used for Smart Launcher backups, so the flow is the same.

After import, quickly check widgets and app shortcuts, then save a new Smart Launcher backup once everything looks right.

If you are coming from another launcher, you can still migrate smoothly by recreating the home layout manually and then saving it as a Smart Launcher backup.

# Move Smart Launcher to a new phone

### How can I move Smart Launcher to a new phone without losing my setup?

Yes, you can migrate your setup using a backup file.

On your old phone:

1. Update Smart Launcher to the latest version.
2. Create a backup from Smart Launcher settings.
3. Copy the backup to your new phone (Google Drive, local transfer, or USB cable).

On your new phone:

1. Install Smart Launcher from the Play Store.
2. Open Smart Launcher and restore/import the backup file.
3. Set Smart Launcher as default launcher.

Please note:

* Home screen layout, icon arrangement, categories, and most Smart Launcher preferences are restored.
* Some third-party widget data may need to be configured again, depending on each widget app.
* App accounts and app-specific internal data are not managed by Smart Launcher backup.

### **Can I enable Google Now/Discover in the Smart Launcher home screen?**

Open *Preferences,* enter *Page manager*, then create an empty position on the left (right in RTL languages) by either moving or removing the existent pages. Press the + symbol in the empty position, then select "Google page".

Smart Launcher will check if you have both the Google app and the *SL Bridge app* installed; otherwise, it will show instructions to complete the integration.

You will be able to access the Google page like any other page on your home screen.

### **How can I add a custom font to my launcher?**

Download the font on your device, then click on the ttf or otf file and open it with Smart Launcher. Alternatively, you can create a folder in the root of your storage, call it “fonts”, and move inside all the fonts you’d like to see in Smart Launcher. You will be able to switch fonts in *Preferences* → *Global settings* → *Fonts*.

### **How can I move an app into a different category?**

Perform a long press on an app, then drag and drop its icon where you want.

### **How can I hide an app?**

Perform a long press on an app, then press the “Eye” icon.

### **I prefer the old Smart Launcher 3 layout. How can I have it back?**

Open *Preferences →Themes*, then select *SL3*.

### **I can’t see the notification count, I just see an empty badge.**

You can change this behaviour in *Preferences* → *Home page* → *Notifications* → *Show notification count.* If after changing this option, you can’t see the new event count it means the app has just one new event or it is not providing accurate info.

### How can I enable left handed mode in SL6?

Left handed mode was an option available in SL3 to move the category bar on the right.

Smart Launcher 5 removed the left handed mode because now you can manually select the position of the category bar. To move your category bar on the right like left handed mode did, open *Preferences* → *App Page* → *Category bar* → Position then select *Right*.

# How to create minimalist, productivity, and accessibility home screens

There is no single perfect layout, and that is exactly the point of Smart Launcher.\
You can shape the home screen around how you actually use your phone.

If you want a minimalist style, keep one clean page with only your essential apps and one widget. A simple icon pack and consistent spacing usually make the whole setup feel calmer immediately.

If your goal is productivity, build the home screen around frequent actions: calendar, notes, and communication apps first. Let categories and Smart Search handle everything else so you spend less time browsing.

If accessibility is the priority, go for readability over density: larger icons and text, high contrast colors, and more spacing between tap targets. The best layout is the one that feels effortless after a full day of use.

A good method is to pick one direction, use it for a week, then adjust one element at a time.

# Gestures

### I cannot set gestures to work with Smart Launcher

Smart Launcher 6 actually is fully optimized to work with gesture navigation, even if your device says "Not supported by your default home app, Smart Launcher".

Some firmware versions limit gesture navigation for **any** custom launcher, including Smart Launcher.

If you have problem setting navigation gestures, please check you are using the latest software available for your device. If yes, we suggest continuing using the three-button navigation until a new software update will be available from your device.

Today, some manufacturers like Xiaomi still haven't addressed the issue. You can check the relevant page for details.

{% content-ref url="/pages/-LmFGY8i3Zu\_U1rvCRW7" %}
[Xiaomi / Redmi / Poco](/faq/common-issues/device-specific-issues/xiaomi)
{% endcontent-ref %}

### Smart Launcher doesn't work well with gesture navigation. I experience lags, blinks and/or the recent apps screen has changed.

Although Smart Launcher 6 actually is fully optimized to work with gesture navigation, some devices still do not perfectly support gesture navigation for third-party launchers like Smart Launcher.

If this is your case, there are only two viable solutions. You can stay with gesture navigation and wait for a future firmware update to fix your problem, or you can switch to three-button navigation.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to fix the problem on our side. We are aware of the problem and we are as frustrated as you for the inconveniences it causes.

However, manufacturers are constantly working to fix this kind of problem so we hope the situation will improve soon.

# Why Smart Launcher needs Accessibility for some gestures

Some gesture actions need Android Accessibility because standard app APIs cannot trigger those specific system interactions directly.

In Smart Launcher, Accessibility may be used for features like opening recent apps, expanding the notification panel, or running advanced gesture actions.

It is not a blanket permission to control everything. Smart Launcher uses it only for the actions you enable and within Android's security model.

If gestures stop working, first check that the Accessibility service is still enabled, then reboot the device if needed.

# Limited Access To Wallpaper

Recent Android updates (starting from **September 2023**) introduced new privacy restrictions that prevent apps from accessing the system wallpaper, unless they’ve been granted a permission that **Google Play no longer allows us to request in-app**.

Because of this, some Smart Launcher features may no longer work out of the box, including:

* **UI Blur**: The blur effect relies on reading the wallpaper to render the background
* **Screenshot Previews**: We can’t include the wallpaper in screenshots without access
* **Wallpaper Backup**: Backups may not include your current wallpaper

***

## Can I still use these features?

Yes, absolutely! there are several solutions:

**Option 1: Set your wallpaper using Smart Launcher**

If you set your wallpaper directly through Smart Launcher (e.g. from the wallpaper gallery), the app can access it immediately, and all features will work as expected.

**Option 2: Take a screenshot of your wallpaper when prompted**

If you're using a wallpaper that Smart Launcher can’t access, the app may ask you to **take a screenshot** of your current home screen. This allows the app to "see" your the wallpaper from the screenshot.\
It’s fast and semi-automated, but you’ll need to repeat it if you change your wallpaper again.

**Option 3: Manually grant wallpaper access**

To restore full functionality regardless of how you set your wallpaper, you can manually grant the required permission using ADB (Android Debug Bridge). This is a **safe one-time setup**.

{% content-ref url="/pages/EjkFrtX11PY6O3MRfFqs" %}
[How to grant permanent wallpaper access in Smart Launcher](/faq/personalization/limited-access-to-wallpaper/how-to-grant-permanent-wallpaper-access-in-smart-launcher)
{% endcontent-ref %}

Once done, Smart Launcher will retain the permission permanently (until you uninstall the app), and all affected features will work as before.

# How to grant permanent wallpaper access in Smart Launcher

Granting Wallpaper Access to Smart Launcher via ADB

Some of Smart Launcher’s best features, like **blurred backgrounds**, **home screen screenshots**, and **backups that include your wallpaper**, need access to your wallpaper.

Starting with newer versions of Android, Google made it so that apps need special permission to access the wallpaper. However, due to Play Store rules, **we’re not allowed to request that permission directly inside the app**.

To solve this, you can grant the permission manually using a safe and official tool called **ADB (Android Debug Bridge)**. It takes just a few minutes, and once done, you’ll never have to repeat it, even after updates. You’ll only need to do it again if you uninstall and reinstall the app.

### Prerequisites (for all systems)

1. You must have a **USB cable** to connect your phone to your computer.
2. On your **Android phone**:
   * Go to **Settings > About phone**
   * Tap **Build number** 7 times to enable Developer options.
   * Then go to **Settings > System > Developer options**
   * Enable **USB debugging**
3. When prompted on your phone, tap **"Allow"** to authorize USB debugging.

***

### Windows

1. **Download ADB**:
   * Go to the official Android SDK Platform Tools page:\
     <https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools>
   * Download the ZIP for Windows and extract it somewhere (e.g. `C:\adb`)
2. **Open Command Prompt**:
   * Press `Win + R`, type `cmd`, press Enter.
   * Navigate to the folder where you extracted ADB:

     ```sh
     cd C:\adb
     ```
3. **Run the command**:

   ```sh
   adb devices
   ```

   * This checks if your phone is connected properly.
   * It should show your device ID. If it says “unauthorized,” check your phone and authorize USB debugging.
4. **Grant the permission**:

   ```sh
   adb shell pm grant ginlemon.flowerfree android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
   ```

***

### MacOS

1. **Install ADB** (choose one):
   * **With Homebrew** (recommended):

     ```sh
     brew install android-platform-tools
     ```
   * Or download manually from:\
     <https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools>
2. **Open Terminal** (⌘ + Space, type “Terminal”)
3. **Connect the device and check connection**:

   ```sh
   adb devices
   ```

   * Authorize your Mac on your phone if prompted.
4. **Grant the permission**:

   ```sh
   adb shell pm grant ginlemon.flowerfree android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
   ```

***

### Linux (Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora/Arch)

1. **Install ADB**:
   * Debian/Ubuntu:

     ```sh
     sudo apt install android-tools-adb
     ```
   * Fedora:

     ```sh
     sudo dnf install android-tools
     ```
   * Arch:

     ```sh
     sudo pacman -S android-tools
     ```
2. **Open a terminal**
3. **Connect the device and check connection**:

   ```sh
   adb devices
   ```
4. **Grant the permission**:

   ```sh
   adb shell pm grant ginlemon.flowerfree android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
   ```

***

### How to verify it worked

1. Open Smart Launcher.
2. Try again any feature that previously failed due to the missing permission.

If something still doesn’t work, try restarting the phone.

# Glossary

Here you can find the meaning of some technical words often used in Smart Launcher.

# Performances

### **Does Smart Launcher drain the battery?**

Generally, **Smart Launcher** does **not drain your battery** faster than your **built-in launcher**, and depending on how you use it, it may also **improve your battery life**.\
**Smart Launcher** has been designed and is continuously **optimized** to use as **few resources as possible** and, when it is running, replaces the built-in launcher.

Extremely few tasks are performed while Smart Launcher is running in the background (Smart Launcher reacts to app installs and uninstalls by creating or deleting some icons).

However, even if **Smart Launcher might consume less battery** than your built-in launcher, your **battery usage** is much more influenced by other factors, like **how and how much you use your device**, but also conditions that do not depend on you, like **network quality** and **environmental brightness**.

Finally, the Android battery stats are not always reliable. If you start noticing something strange about the battery usage of Smart Launcher or any other app, we suggest checking your battery stats regularly to see if the problem persists.

### Does Smart Launcher support 120hz?

Yes, Smart Launcher adapts to the refresh rate allowed by the system. If your phone supports 120hz and the OS allows it, Smart Launcher will run at 120hz.

### Does Smart Launcher make my phone less safe?

No, by no means.

# Best Smart Launcher setup for battery-friendly phones

Smart Launcher is already optimized to be energy efficient and, as explained in the page below, battery drain is usually influenced by broader usage and environmental conditions.

{% content-ref url="/pages/h96Q7S6XDSk7jyKgZ2NE" %}
[Performances](/faq/performance-and-battery/performances)
{% endcontent-ref %}

If you want to push battery saving further, here are some practical suggestions:

1. Disable features you do not use. If you do not use an SL feature or widget, removing it can help both battery usage and home screen clarity.
2. If your device has an AMOLED display, prefer a black or very dark wallpaper and use dark mode as much as possible.
3. Avoid live wallpapers, which typically consume more energy than static wallpapers.
4. Avoid widgets that refresh too often.
5. Reduce update frequency for features like random wallpaper rotation and news feed refresh.

Finally, remember that most battery monitoring tools provide rough estimates. If you notice unusual behavior, observe it for a few days, then change one variable at a time to understand what actually affects your battery usage.

# Widget updates stopped working

### Why do widget updates stop after a while?

When this happens, Smart Launcher is usually not the direct cause. In most cases, Android battery restrictions stop background tasks used by the widget app.

Try this checklist:

1. Turn off battery optimization for both **Smart Launcher** and the **widget app**.
2. Allow the widget app to run in background and enable auto-start (if your device provides this option).
3. Open the widget app once and confirm all required permissions (for example location, calendar, or notifications).
4. Remove and add the widget again from the home screen.
5. Reboot the device.

If the problem appears again, your firmware is likely applying aggressive background limits. In that case, check:

[**dontkillmyapp.com**](https://dontkillmyapp.com/)

{% content-ref url="/pages/-LmFD-JI\_WDNokmjHe08" %}
[Device specific issues](/faq/common-issues/device-specific-issues)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Apps missing or duplicated in the app drawer

### Why do some apps not appear, or appear twice, in the app drawer?

This usually depends on app visibility rules or on how Android exposes app variants.

Common causes:

* **Hidden apps**: the app may be manually hidden.
* **Category/filter settings**: a category filter may hide part of your app list.
* **Work profile apps**: work and personal instances can appear as separate apps.
* **Cloned apps / Dual apps**: some manufacturers duplicate apps by design.

Quick checks:

1. Verify that the app is not hidden.
2. Reset or review app drawer filters/categories.
3. If you use a work profile, check whether both personal and work apps are enabled.
4. If your device supports dual apps, check that feature in system settings.
5. Reboot the device and let Smart Launcher reindex the app list.

If duplicates persist only for specific brands, see:

# Why is the experience with Google Discover sometimes unstable?

The integration with Google Discover is based on a workaround since Google has not released a public API to officially support this feature. This means that the current setup may have issues, and changes on Google's end could break the integration at any time, without any options for us to fix it.

#### What should I do if Google Discover is not working as expected?

If you experience issues with Google Discover, we recommend using Smart Launcher's default news panel for a more stable experience. This panel is optimized for Smart Launcher, ensuring reliable and consistent performance.

#### Can I report issues with Google Discover?

Since we do not have direct control over the Google Discover integration, we kindly ask that you refrain from submitting bug reports regarding this feature. We understand that this may be frustrating, but without an official API, we lack the tools to address any issues effectively.

# QuickSwitch support

### **Does Smart Launcher support QuickSwitch/ there are plans to introduce supports to it?**

No, Smart Launcher does not support QuickSwitch, and while we’d like to introduce this feature in the future, there are no plans to do so in the near future.

There are several reasons behind this decision:

* **Smart Launcher is not based on Launcher3**, the open-source Android launcher. This means implementing QuickSwitch would require us to develop a custom solution from scratch, diverting significant time and resources from other key features.
* **Rooted devices represent less than 1% of our user base**. Given the high development cost, prioritizing QuickSwitch support would not be a justifiable choice at this time.

We always evaluate features based on their impact and feasibility, and while QuickSwitch is something we find interesting, our current focus is on improvements that benefit the majority of our users.

# Gestures conflict with Android system navigation

### Smart Launcher gestures conflict with Android system gestures. How can I fix it?

Conflicts can happen because navigation gestures are handled by the system, while Smart Launcher gestures are handled by the launcher and (for some actions) by the Accessibility service.

Try this sequence:

1. Update your device firmware to the latest available version.
2. Re-enable the Smart Launcher Accessibility service from Android settings.
3. Turn off battery optimization for Smart Launcher (to avoid Accessibility service shutdowns).
4. Reduce overlaps: avoid assigning launcher gestures that are too similar to system edge/back gestures.
5. If issues persist, temporarily switch to 3-button navigation and test again.

# Device specific issues

# Google / Pixels

Google devices are an ideal choice for Smart Launcher users!

## The Launcher UI freezes and becomes unresponsive multiple times a day

We are aware of an issue affecting several devices running Android 14 or 15, where the Launcher UI may freeze and become unresponsive. This problem is due to a bug in the operating system itself, and unfortunately, it affects all third-party launchers, not just ours. As this issue is beyond our control, we are currently unable to provide a direct fix.

We have reported this issue to Google through their Issue Tracker, and we are awaiting a resolution from them. If you are experiencing this problem, please consider starring the issue on the Google Issue Tracker to help increase its visibility and urgency for Google.

You can view and star the issue here:\
<https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/353538494>

## Smart Launcher is not working well with gestures (Android 8 and 9)

Starting from Android P, Google introduced a gesture system as alternative to the navigation bar. Unfortunately, only build-in launchers have full control over the new navigation system. 3rd party launchers like Smart Launcher have to rely on a fallback mode fully handled by the Android system.

# OnePlus

Good news, One Plus devices work just fine with Smart Launcher! There aren't relevant known issues but if you find any, please report the problem to support+oneplus\@smartlauncher.net

## Can't set Smart Launcher as the default launcher/home ap&#x70;**.**

This may happen after a system update. When this happens try this:

* Go to **System settings** -> **Apps and Notifications** -> **Default apps -> Home app**.
* Select "OnePlus launcher"
* Go again to **System settings** -> **Apps and Notifications** -> **Default apps -> Home app**.
* Select "Smart Launcher"<br>

# Samsung

Samsung devices usually work just fine with Smart Launcher. If you are experiencing some issues, here you may find the solution you are looking for.

## **The wallpaper does not scroll.**

It seems like Samsung disabled (or broke) this feature in the One UI 2.1 update. The feature has been disabled at the firmware level, so there is nothing we can do to fix it. Our best suggestion is to ask for the reintroduction of this feature on the Samsung forum.\
<https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Note10/Wallpaper-scrolling-not-working-after-one-ui-2-1-update/td-p/1211105>

**UPDATE:** The feature works again as expected in the firmware based on One UI 3.0. If you are experiencing this problem, check if a firmware update is available for your device.

## **The clock reports a wrong alarm time, generally 5 minutes before the set time.**

This is a known bug. Unfortunately, we cannot fix it, because it is caused by another app (Samsung clock app) which communicate erroneous info to Smart Launcher.

The good news is you can easily fix solve the problem by installing and using a different Alarm clock app like Google Clock\
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.deskclock>

## Other issues

At the moment, there aren’t any other known issues on Samsung devices, if you find any, please report the problem to <support+samsung@smartlauncher.net>

# Xiaomi / Redmi / Poco

Xiaomi/Redmi devices usually work just fine with Smart Launcher. If you are experiencing some issues, here you may find the solution you are looking for.

## Gesture system not working with Smart Launcher

![](/files/LhNS7JgbxwluJZlK0CmJ)

As the message clearly say&#x73;**,** this is not a problem caused by Smart Launcher, Xiaomi doesn't allow gestures to be used with third-party launchers since Android 11. The problem cannot be fixed by the SL devs but it can only be fixed by a future Xiaomi update.

## **The clock reports a wrong alarm time, even if I didn't set any!**

This is a known bug. Unfortunately, we cannot fix it, because it is caused by another app (MIUI clock app) which communicates erroneous info to Smart Launcher.

The good news is you can easily fix solve the problem by installing and using a different Alarm clock app like Google Clock\
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.deskclock>

## Widgets do not respond to touch

This behavior is consequence of a change in MIUI 11 and it's totally independent from Smart Launcher. Now you need to enable the option **Display pop-up windows while running in the background** (in **Settings** > **Apps** > **Rights** > **Other permissions**) for each widget you want to use on your home screen.

# Oppo / Realme

Some Oppo devices do not support third-party launchers and even when this feature is supported, the procedure is more complicated than it should.

## Set Smart Launcher as default launcher

You can set Smart Launcher as default launcher on your Oppo device without rooting or using advanced tools. The option is already available in the system settings, it’s just a little hidden and unfortunately, Oppo prevents the launcher to help the user to find its location.

Install [Smart Launcher](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ginlemon.flowerfree) then follow this 4-steps procedure.

(Tested on Oppo Reno, Oppo RealMe 1, Oppo F7, Oppo A57, Oppo A83, Oppo A37, Oppo A71, Oppo F5, Oppo F3, OPPO F3 Plus)

#### 1 – From any screen, swipe down the notification panel and press the setting icon in the top right corner.

![](https://www.smartlauncher.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Group-e1565786291665-865x1024.jpg)

####

#### 2 – Scroll down the settings list to find “App management” and select it.

![](https://www.smartlauncher.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Group-1-e1565786489382-761x1024.jpg)

#### 3 – Now select, “Default App” then “Homescreen”

![](https://www.smartlauncher.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Group-2-e1565786918591-1024x459.jpg)

#### 4. Finally, you can set change your default launcher and confirm your choice.

![](https://www.smartlauncher.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Group-3-963x1024.jpg)

You should now be able to enjoy your favorite launcher on your Oppo device!

## **I cannot set Smart Launcher as default launcher. I cannot find the option where it should be.**

Appearantly some Oppo devices are just incompatible with third party launchers. If this is the case, it means you won't be able to use Smart Launcher or any other launcher on your device.

## Other issues

At the moment, there aren’t any other known issues on Oppo device, if you find any, please report the problem to <support+oppo@smartlauncher.net>

# Huawei / Honor

Unfortunately, the most recent Huawei/Honor devices cannot install Smart Launcher.

{% hint style="info" %}
Because of the Huawei ban, all the Huawei/Honor devices sold after 2020 cannot use Google Play Services. This means, **you cannot install Smart Launcher** using Play Store and even if you install it via APK, **you won't be able to activate your premium license** on these devices.\
\
At the moment Smart Launcher is not available on Huawei App Gallery and even in the case we will decide to support Huawei App Gallery in future, it won't be possible to migrate your previous license on your new phone.\
\
For all these reasons, if you wish to use Smart Launcher on your new device, we suggest looking at other manufacturers.
{% endhint %}

## The choice of Smart Launcher as default launcher is often reset

Unfortunately this problems is entirely caused by the Huawei firmware. Every time a launcher is updated the choice of your default launcher is reset. If you have 10 launchers installed, you will have your choice reset very, very often.

Also the choice is reset even if the current launcher is closed in a way that the system consider anomalous.

We cannot do anything to fix this issue, our best suggestion is to uninstall launchers that you don't use and to use some patience :-(

## **While I was using my Huawei/Honor device, a message appeared saying “Your phone has just recovered from a serious error caused by Smart Launcher”. What does it mean?**

You should completely ignore that message, it’s just an attempt by the system to convince you to come back to the built-in launcher. That message appears after a simple crash or a freeze not necessarily caused by Smart Launcher itself. There is absolutely nothing to worry about it.

## **I cannot set Smart Launcher as default launcher. I cannot find the option where it should be.**

Unfortunately Huawei is known to block the launcher selection on some devices, appearantly only those imported from China.

You can read more here:

<https://www.xda-developers.com/huawei-confirms-blocking-third-party-launchers-chinese-emui-9/>

## **I tried to add a shortcut to the home page but when I try to launch it a message says “The system doesn’t allow Smart Launcher to perform this action”.**

Sometimes, device manufacturers, limit some features to work only with their own apps. This happens especially with quick dial shortcuts. Unfortunately, Smart Launcher can’t circumvent this limit. Our suggestion is to install and use a different app to add the kind of shortcut.

## Other issues

At the moment, there aren’t any other known issues on Huawei/Honor devices, if you find any, please report the problem to <support+huawei@smartlauncher.net>

# Amazon Fire

Smart Launcher is not compatible with Amazon devices.

Unfortunately Amazon devices (Fire tablets and phones) run a modified version of Android that is not designed to work with third party launcher like Smart Launcher. Because of this, Smart Launcher is not officially supported by Amazon devices.

Depending on your device model, you could be able to find some workaround this limitation, however since we never tested such methods we cannot provide you more details.

# Android TV Boxes

Smart Launcher might work on your Android TV box but we do not provide technical support for this devices.

If your TV box is based on Android, there are good chances it will support Smart Launcher.

However, Android TV boxes are produced by many different manufacturers that usually run heavily customized versions of the Android OS. Sometimes these customizations result in the impossibility to set a third-party launcher as default or break some component required by Smart Launcher to work.

These kinds of issues are often not resolvable. Also, without the specific hardware is almost impossible for us to find and fix a specific issue.\
\
**Because of these reasons, we currently do not provide technical support for Android TV boxes.**

# Apple / iPhone

If you were hoping to run Smart Launcher on an Apple device, here are some bad news.

### **You’re screwed!**

iOS doesn’t allow third-party launchers any chance to take over the home screen, and it doesn’t offer any functionality similar to what third-party launchers provide. Additionally, the system does not provide an API to implement any of the features you’d expect from a launcher.

Apple has designed their operating system to only support their own interface, leaving little room for the kind of freedom and flexibility that Android users enjoy.

So, if you are looking for a customizable experience, remember that on Apple, you’re stuck with what comes out of the box.

# License and purchases

Smart Launcher depends on the Google Play Store to verify your purchases. Here are some details regarding our licenses and instructions on how to resolve the most common issues.

### **I'm having a problem with my license**

Check this page

{% content-ref url="/pages/ETUs3Soz4bi3hLHPel7n" %}
[Problems and troubleshooting](/faq/purchases-and-plans/license-and-purchases/problems-and-troubleshooting)
{% endcontent-ref %}

### **Can I use my Premium license on more than one device?**

If you purchased a new smartphone or if you have more than one Android device, you can use Smart Launcher on these devices without having to purchase other licenses. You just need to log in the new device into the same Google account you used to purchase your Smart Launcher license.

If you already did it but you can't access premium functionalities, try to restart Smart Launcher. If this doesn't work, try to uninstall Smart Launcher and reinstall it while you are logged into Play Store with the same account used to purchase Smart Launcher.

### **Can I migrate my purchase to a new email account?**

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

### Can I upgrade my subscription to the yearly plan or lifetime?

No, this is currently not supported. To switch to a different subscription we suggest waiting for the current subscription to end, then subscribing to the new plan.

### I want to buy a license without using the Google Play Store

Unfortunately, implementing and maintaining an alternative license system is expensive, and the low number of requests we receive is not high enough to give us a reason to work on it.

### **I already paid years ago for SL3. Do I need to pay again for SL6 Pro?**

Smart Launcher 3 Classic has been discontinued and is no longer available for new users on the Play Store.\
It no longer receives updates and we do not provide support or troubleshooting for it.

Official announcement:

[Smart Launcher 3 Classic will no longer be available for new users](https://www.smartlauncher.net/blog/smart-launcher-3-classic-no-longer-available-from-the-play-store)

If you already purchased Smart Launcher 3 Pro you don’t need to pay again for Smart Launcher 6 Pro. If you purchased your license with an in-app purchase, your license will be automatically detected.

If you purchased SL3 Pro as a separate app, you need to keep it installed alongside SL6 in order to verify your Pro license\*. You can download SL3 Pro again, only if you had purchased it before, from [this link](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ginlemon.flowerpro).

You can check your license status in *Preferences → Info version*.

If you have both versions installed but you can't have your license verified, try to uninstall and then reinstall SL3.

Please remember, Smart Launcher 3 Pro license doesn't include the Feature Pack. This optional purchase unlocks some new features introduced by the latest updates (it's already included in SL6 Pro).

*\*Please note, both versions of Smart Launcher must be installed and genuine (not cracked and installed via Play Store).*

# Problems and troubleshooting

### A pop-up from Smart Launcher informs me that my subscription has ended, but I believe it may be an error.

If you believe it's an error from Smart Launcher, we suggest proceeding by disabling the premium features. On this page, you will find details about how to resolve the issue. Once it is fixed, Smart Launcher will re-enable your premium features.

### **After the last update (or a new install or a factory reset) Smart Launcher doesn’t recognize my purchases.**

You are likely experiencing an issue related to how the Play Store manages in-app purchases. In-app items are associated with the account used for their purchase and are considered valid only in apps that are downloaded or updated while you are signed in to the Play Store using that account.

**Solution:** sign in to Play Store **with the same account you used to purchase the license,** then clear the cache of your Play Store app and reboot your device. If it still does not work, try this procedure.

{% content-ref url="/pages/-Lc6nPZcAvkHr8LDwSZQ" %}
[Multiple Google accounts licensing issues](/faq/purchases-and-plans/license-and-purchases/multiple-google-accounts-licensing-issues)
{% endcontent-ref %}

[Contact us](mailto:support@smartlauncher.net) if the problem persists.

### **I just completed a purchase, but the license is still not activated**

In some cases, Play Store and Smart Launcher need a little time to sync the purchase status.

First, restart your device to force Play Store and Smart Launcher to resync the license state.\
After reboot, open Smart Launcher again and check if premium features are unlocked.

If your bank app shows a payment notification immediately, do not worry: in many cases this is a temporary authorization hold while the purchase is being verified, not a final charge.

### **I want a refund, for reasons…**

Please use fill out this [**form**](https://goo.gl/forms/gwJYFsH4LgpZNTCh1) to request a refund. Our team will review your request and will consider your eligibility to get a refund. As described in our [**Terms Of Service**](https://www.smartlauncher.net/terms), all refunds will be at our sole discretion.

# Multiple Google accounts licensing issues

Please follow this procedure if Smart Launcher can’t verify your license and if you are using more than a Google account on your device.

* Uninstall Smart Launcher, if you want you can perform a backup to avoid losing your configuration.
* Using a **computer** open this page <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ginlemon.flowerfree> and log in using the same account you used to purchase the license.
* Click on “Install” on the web page, then wait for the installation process to finish on your device.
* After the installation, check if Smart Launcher recognizes your license. If it doesn’t, a reboot could be necessary.

Since the issue causing this problem is related to how Google Play Store handles purchases in a multi-account environment, this procedure could help even if you’re experiencing the same problem with another app.

# Price of Smart Launcher

Answers to questions about pricing and licenses.

## **Why is Smart Launcher expensive?**

Smart Launcher is developed by one of the **largest and most experienced teams** among launcher developers. While this results in higher development costs, **it** also **allows** us **to deliver more frequent updates and improved features**. If you compare Smart Launcher’s price to other products developed by teams of a similar size, you’ll find **it is competitively priced or even less expensive**.

## Why do I see different prices at times?

Smart Launcher’s pricing is adapted to the cost of living in different countries, and we sometimes run experiments to identify the most appropriate prices for our users.

Over time, the price may change to reflect inflation and development costs. For reference, the lifetime license for Smart Launcher in 2012 was just $1, and now it is at least 20x, reflecting the product’s evolution and growing value.

So keep it in mind that looking at the long-term perspective, the current price may represent great value!

## **Other launchers cost less**

Some other launchers are cheaper because they are built and maintained by one person, or a very small team. That structure keeps costs low, but it is not comparable to Smart Launcher.

Our main cost is development, and development cost depends directly on team size. A larger team allows us to ship updates more often, maintain higher quality, fix issues faster, and support the product reliably for the long term.

## **Would lowering the price increase premium purchases?**

Our testing shows that lower prices don’t necessarily lead to better results. We’ve found that the current pricing strategy supports the sustainability of the product while ensuring consistent quality and innovation.

***

## **Why Smart Launcher has subscriptions?**

**Smart Launcher is continuously updated to provide new features and improvements.** Indipendently from when you purchase it, we continue working on it every day and offering the same support to old and new users. A business model based only on lifetime license wasn't sustainable, this is why in 2018 we introduced subscriptions as an alternative purchase option.

Subscriptions bring advantages for both users and developers:

* **For users:**
  * **You pay only as long as you’re satisfied with the product**. If you no longer enjoy the product, you can cancel without regret.
  * **Developers are incentivized** to maintain and improve the product for loyal users rather than focusing only on acquiring new ones.
  * **If the developer abandons the product** or doesn’t meet your expectations, **you can stop paying**.
* **For developers:**
  * Subscriptions provide a stable and predictable revenue stream, which allows us to invest in improvements and updates even in a saturated market.
  * This model ensures that the product remains sustainable and high-quality over time.

## What "lifetime license" means?

The term “lifetime” can sometimes be **ambiguous** in the context of software, so here is our definition:

***A lifetime license guarantees unlimited access to all the features available at the time of purchase**, for as long as you use the product.*\
*This excludes features provided by third parties, which may be discontinued at any time for reasons beyond our control.*

When a new version of Smart Launcher is released, you’ll receive access to it at no additional cost, and you will retain access to all the features included in the version you paid for.

That said, we reserve the possibility to introduce optional new features that may require an additional cost, when necessary. This would apply to features involving significant recurring costs for us or those that could not be financially justified in the context of our regular development. Here are two hypothetical examples:

* A feature that requires an expensive third-party service to work.
* A feature we would normally not consider for inclusion due to its development effort, but it is required by a few people who are willing to support its development.

Please note, these are just hypothetical examples. As of July 2025, we have no short-term or long-term plans to introduce such features. If we ever do, we will announce it transparently.

# False reports from Avast

If your Avast-AVG powered antivirus reports Smart Launcher as malware, don't worry it's a false positive.

### How can I know if Smart Launcher is safe?

You can verify it by yourselves by scanning your Smart Launcher APK with [VirusTotal](https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload) or any other antivirus not powered by Avast or AVG (which are distributed by the same company).

### History

We contacted Avast and tried to solve the issue with them.

Although they recognized the issue, it seems [they are unable](https://twitter.com/Avast/status/1554496154687229953) (or do not care) to permanently solve it. Once in a while, Avast marks a new SL update as malware. People report the issue to us, we contact Avast and Avast manually cleans the error.\
\
We requested a better solution but Avast didn't provide it yet.

We are a small indie team and for us, nothing is as offensive as marking our hard work as "malware".

At the moment we are studying a solution (legal and/or technical).

### What you can do

1. Uninstall or disable any Avast / AVG product from your phone.
2. Help us report the issue to Avast, using their [Twitter account](https://twitter.com/Avast), their customer support at <customer.support@avast.com> or the forms to report a false positive ([Avast](https://www.avast.com/false-positive-file-form.php) / [AVG](https://www.avg.com/en-us/false-positive-file-form#mac))
3. Avoid devices that have Avast / AVG software built in.<br>

When enabled your wallpaper will move accordingly with your device, generating the perception of a 3D space.

You can find this new option in *Preferences -> Wallpaper -> Settings* (gear button)

### Global appearance

Smart Launcher 5.5 introduces a new menu where you can find all the options related to the Smart Launcher appearance.

### Customizable fonts

You can now customize your launcher using the entire Google Font Library. The font picker includes categories and a search box to make it easy to find the font you are looking for.

You can find this new option in *Preferences -> Global appearance -> Fonts*

### Editable themes

We heard from you. In SL5.5 you will be able to tweak your launcher appearance by changing the colors and opacities. You can use the new settings to adjust the app page transparency, change the text colors, or to create unique combinations to customize your phone.

You can find this new option in *Preferences -> Global appearance -> Edit theme*

### Picked icons normalization

After picking a picture to replace an icon, you will have the choice to keep its shape or to change it to match the other icons' shape.

### 5 new adaptive shapes

### Other additions

* You can now resize the icon labels' text size.
* The Premium Features screen will help you to find all the premium features you purchased in the same place.

### Other improvements

* Rebalanced UI for big screens
* Blur now applies even behind the Smart Search bar
* We improved the news page with a new UI and several performance improvements. You can also drop a news category by long-pressing a tab and tapping "remove".

### **Fixes**

* Fixed a problem that caused icons of different sizes on the App page.

### A goodbye

We always tried to maintain old features even when these exist only for legacy reasons. However, we really felt it was time to remove lock screen support from Smart Launcher.

Lock screens were introduced a long time ago in SL2 and even if they worked well enough on older Android versions they require too many compromises on modern devices. We stopped working on them years ago and now we don't feel like we still want to suggest this experience to our users, so we are removing lock screen support in SL 5.5.

If you will miss them, remember that most of our lock screens can work even without Smart Launcher and that in any case, all the lockers will continue to work with SL3.

# 5.4

Released on December 2019

### Folders in the App Page

Folders can be added to the App page by opening the menu and selecting "Add Folder". You can a **Smart folders** which are folders that work a bit like automatic categories. Just pick the *photography* folder and all your camera apps will be automatically grouped in the newly created folder.

### Notifications in the App Page

The apps in the App Page will now reports new events with a badge. You can enable this option from Preferences -> App Page -> Notifications -> App page Notifications

### Support for Android 10 gesture navigation

Following the release of the most recent Android 10 update, which introduce compatibility between the gesture navigation and third party launchers, we introduced several changes to ensure the new navigation system is perfectly working with Smart Launcher.\
\
Please note: your device may say that Smart Launcher does not support gesture navigation. This message is just misleading, since the support for third party launchers is provided by your device firmware. In this case all you can do is to wait for an update from your device manufacturer or to switch to the 3 buttons navigation system.

### Massive code changes

We changed over 40.000 lines of code, migrating most of the launcher to Kotlin and adopting modern approaches suggested by the Android dev team. According to our tests, Smart Launcher 5.4 produces up to 60% less frames over 16ms compared to SL5.3, resulting in a smoother experience.

### Other additions

* 4 new wallpapers specifically designed for Smart Launcher by Giovanni Piemontese\
  \&#xNAN;*available in Preferences -> Wallpapers -> Smart Wallpapers*
* New option "Show hidden apps in search results"\
  \&#xNAN;*available in Preferences -> Security and privacy*

### **Fixes**

* Fixed several issues relative to the built-in weather clock widget.
* Fixed a problem that prevented the search bar to execute USSD code

# 5.2

Released on March 2019

### **Dark mode**

All the menus and dialogs now support a dark theme. The dark theme is enabled when enabled by your system preferences (Android Q and higher), however you can force it to be always active or to be enabled during night time or when you are using a dark wallpaper (Android Lollipop or higher).

### **AMOLED black**

After enabling the AMOLED black option, the dark theme will use a pure black background instead of a grayish one. This will allow AMOLED screens to save even more energy.

### **Redesigned wallpaper selector**

The new wallpaper selector has been redesigned using smooth shadows and miniatures which use the same aspect ratio of the device in use.

### Add multiple icons at once

You can now add multiple icons to the home page or to a folder at once. In order to do it, press the button to add a new icon, then select the objects you want to add and click on "Confirm" to complete the operation.

### **Modular page system**

Smart Launcher 5.2 introduces the possibility to rearrange the “pages” which compose your home screen. This allows more customization and gives to the users the choice to enable or disable certain components depending on their needs.

### **News page**

One of the new components introduced with Smart Launcher 5.2 is the News page. The news feed is customizable with specific interests and with different layouts: *large*, *compact* or *only text*. Like any other page in SL5.2, the news page is movable on one of the four sides of the screen. By default, its position is on the top for users coming from SL 5.1 or previous, on the left for new users.

### **Blur mode**

The Ambient Theme is now even more complete thanks to the new blur mode, a complex system of different overlays that creates a perfect blend between UI and wallpaper and guarantee text readability avoiding darkening the background.

### **Redesigned Menus**

We worked on our community feedback and we redesigned every menu to be more consistent and intuitiv&#x65;**.**

### **Automatic app page cleaning**

Enabling the option *Hide unused Icons* in *the Preferences* → *App Page*, Smart Launcher will automatically **hide icons of apps never used**. Nothing will be uninstalled, everything will be accessible from the *Hidden apps* menu, but your app collection will look much slimmer!

### **Tools to detect malware**

During the last year, we collected many reports of users seeing popup ads and experiencing other unwanted behaviors during the usage of their device. The worse is that many people thought that ads were showed by the app running at that moment. This harms us and other apps, so we decided to take action and introduce some simple tools that can **help users identify suspicious apps**. The tools are available in:

{% hint style="info" %}
Preferences > Smart Fix
{% endhint %}

### **New Dark Wallpaper**

Designed exclusively for Smart launcher 5.2

### **Fixes**

* **Category bar position** can be placed on the left, right, bottom or auto.
* **Apps can be shared** when long press an icon in apps pag&#x65;**.**
* Appearance settings are now moved in **Global Appearance.**
* New share screenshot menu.
* **Home screen gallery** has been added to settings.

# 5.1

Released on August 2018

### **Light Ambient Mode**

The ambient theme was designed not only to make the UI more graceful but also to ensure the readability of the information on the screen (widgets/icon labels). In Smart Launcher 5.0 this goal was achieved by using a dark overlay on top of light wallpapers but this caused light wallpapers to look darker and dull. Light Ambient theme works by keeping unaltered the wallpaper lightness while making the foreground UI items black.

### **Search Page**

The Search page is now a module like the App page or the Widget page. This means they have the same working and they will, eventually, be swappable in the near future.

### **Notifications**

The notification system has been rebuilt. The system in 5.0 was designed to work only using the official Android APIs. Sadly, app developments rarely use the API (event Gmail doesn’t!) so we stopped trusting in other developers’ goodwill and we created a system that uses different approaches to get notification count. Hopefully, this will allow us to avoid showing a blank dot when the option “show event count” is marked.

### **Rename folders**

You can now rename a folder by clicking its name while it’s open.

### **Showcase your home screen**

The functionality “Take a screenshot” is now Showcase your home screen. The tool has been improved to create more complex artwork, adding shadows and simulating a device frame. It allows to preview the generated artwork and to save it locally or share it as before. If the tool will be appreciated we will expand it in future.

### **5 new adaptive icon shapes**

The new shapes add new effects like brushes and pixels. *Feature pack is required to unlock adaptive icon shapes.*

### **Fixes**

* In SL 5.0 enabling a single gesture caused all the pages to be scrollable only by swiping from the borders. In SL 5.1, **double finger gestures don’t interfere with page navigations anymore** and single finger gestures affect only a specific direction.
* **Improved drag\&drop interactions**. For example, now you can move an item from a folder to another one with a single drag\&drop action.
* Android P users can now **turn off their screen without any side effect** (like fingerprint not working)
* Home page icons have been updated with **more vibrant colors**.
* Some UI elements have been updated with **rounded corners**.
* The wallpaper scroll **is now interpolated** to appear more natural.
* The search bar can now use **Ambient theme** even when set as **floating**(Search bar → appearance →Skin → Ambient)
* Dark system icons are **automatically enabled on very light backgrounds** (Only Android Marshmallow and higher)
* Many other improvements and bugs fixed.

# 5.0

Released on March 2018

### **The new Design**

Our vision was to make Smart Launcher ready for the future

We focused our attention on some key aspects to better address the future trends. Because of the dimension of new devices, some UI elements have become difficult to reach with a single hand. The design of the launcher has moved to the bottom the items you usually interact with the most, while it reserves the upper area to information and visual contents.

The new design is based on a unified visual language we created and named Acrylic Design System. It provides a set of styles, components and guidelines in order to give the user a coherent and consistent experience and interface.

### **Ambient theme**

Objects in the real world are never black or white, they reflect colors and adapt to lights. We applied this idea to the Smart Launcher UI and we got a new, more materic look and the ability to automatically match the wallpaper in use.

### **Adaptive icons**

Adaptive icon is a new icon format introduced with Android Oreo 8.0.

Smart Launcher 5 has been designed to exploit the advantages of the new format and is the first launcher to introduce Adaptive icon backward compatibility for every device running Android 4.0 or higher!

And if you’re already running Oreo and you miss the classic not-adaptive icons we have a good news, you can have your old icons back!

### **Search bar and Search page**

We have moved the search bar at the bottom and we have given it a new look fully integrated into the design of the launcher. The search page has been rethought as a starting point for any interaction with the device. The new layout shows more contents and allows to perform some actions like adding a new contact and performing calculations!

### **New drawer layouts**

The new category bar has been moved to the bottom to be closer to your thumb. However, you can choose between 3 different layouts. You can have the category bar on the side, on the bottom or you can disable it for a more “classic” look.

### **New clock widget**

The new built-in clock shows info about alarm, next event and weather.

### **Freeform widget mode**

You can now resize and move widgets in the home page without grid snapping for a complete control over your home screen.

### **Redesigned UI for preferences**

Preferences have been restyled and reorganized to be more readable and easy to understand.

### **New wallpaper picker with backup**

The wallpaper picker has been redesigned to show more contents from different picture sources. We included an option to backup your previous wallpaper before trying a new one.

### **Backup with preview**

A short text is often not enough to recognize a specific backup. New backups, created with Smart Launcher 5, include a preview that makes it easier to find the backup you want to restore.

### **Integrated notification plugin**

The notification plugin has been integrated in the launcher and is now more stable and reliable.

### **Share your home screen**

Take a picture of your home screen and share it attaching some info about your set up. We expect to expand this functionality with advanced editing tools in the future.

### A fantastic easter egg

# Legacy

Older pages kept for historical reference.

{% content-ref url="/pages/AYhKQHZrU9k6qFaHIoT2" %}
[Update to Smart Launcher 6](/faq/legacy/update-to-smart-launcher-6)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Update to Smart Launcher 6

This page collects common issues reported after updating to Smart Launcher 6 and possible workarounds.

### After updating to SL6 I lost my Pro license

Your license is still valid. Look at [**license problems**](/faq/purchases-and-plans/license-and-purchases#after-the-last-update-or-a-new-install-or-a-factory-reset-smart-launcher-doesnt-recognize-my-purchases) to find how to solve the issue.

### After updating to SL6 my icons are too small/large. How can I fix this?

Hold your finger down in the empty space between your icons.

You should see a menu called "Icon group"**.** it means your icons are now part of an "Icon group" widget. Press on "Configure" and change the option called "Icon size".

### Did you remove the Flower/Icon circle/Honeycomb/Arch layout?

No, we didn't. It's very easy to add one of the old layouts.

Just perform a long press on an empty area on the home screen, then select "Add a widget" -> "Icon Group" and select the layout you prefer.

### Where are my SL5 backups?

Your backups have been moved to a new folder because the older one was going to not be accessible anymore on newer Android versions.\
The backups have been moved from `/sdcard/.smartlauncher/backups` to `/sdcard/Smart Launcher` Backups or `/sdcard/Documents/Smart Launcher Backups`.

### The screen rotation doesn't work the same on SL6.

We are aware of this difference. The old SL5 home screen rotation wasn't flexible enough to be compatible with anything different from the SL5 rigid layout where the home screen was rigidly divided into a widget area and an icons area.

The SL5 rotation model is not available in SL6.

### I don't like the new folder design.

The new folder design makes better use of available space, by using the whole screen area when you have a lot of icons but only the space strictly necessary when you have a few icons. Also, it is more coherent with the launcher style.

### I'm still unhappy with some of the new features of SL6

We are sorry about that. As always we will use your feedback to improve our launcher. Our [**Reddit community**](https://www.reddit.com/r/smartlauncher) is a great place to discuss your ideas or suggestions.

We also suggest taking some time to evaluate the new update. Most of the features have been just moved or slightly changed, you may change your idea after trying them for some days.

# Icon Packs

Smart Launcher supports the same icon pack format supported by most third-party launchers. However, there are a few tricks to get the best from your icon pack when used with Smart Launcher.

## Start

If you don't have an icon pack yet, we suggest starting with an icon pack template like [Blueprint](https://github.com/jahirfiquitiva/Blueprint). This will save you a lot of time and ensure that your icon pack is compatible with Smart Launcher.

Alternatively, you can follow one of the many tutorials available online. Then, just check to have these lines in your app manifest to ensure that Smart Launcher recognizes your icon pack.

```xml
<activity android:name="<...>" android:exported="true">
    <intent-filter>
        <action android:name="org.adw.launcher.THEMES" />
        <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
    </intent-filter>
</activity>
```

## Advanced features

If your icon pack supports any of the advanced features listed below, they must be declared in your app manifest.

**For each feature, you need to add an additional "category" tag.**

Here's an example:

```xml
<activity android:name="<...>" android:exported="true">
    <intent-filter>
        <action android:name="org.adw.launcher.THEMES" />
        <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
        <category android:name="INSERT HERE FEATURE TAG" />
    </intent-filter>
</activity>
```

### Declare Material You support

**`org.icontheme.CHANGES_WITH_MATERIAL_YOU_COLORS`**

Enable this flag if icons in your icon pack reference [Material Colors](https://medium.com/@xch3dx/using-material-you-in-your-app-15ec982eecb4).

| With the flag | Without the flag |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| <p><img src="/files/R8Cl5T6Tt2ELY59WkUFC" alt=""><br>When the wallpaper is changed, the icons will automatically update their color.</p> | <p><img src="/files/1ozEqrG3SgYeSYVjJolC" alt=""><br>Your icons won't update when the wallpaper is changed.</p> |

**Note:** Enabling this flag does not automatically change the color of your icons based on the wallpape&#x72;**.** Instead, it informs the launcher about your theme's capability to take advantage of material colors. Misusing this flag may lead to significant performance issues, causing frequent icon refreshes without a valid reason.

#### Summary:

✅ Include this flag if Smart Launcher should reload the icon pack when the system palette changes.\
❌ Don't include it if your icon pack wouldn't benefit from it, as it would only waste resources.

***

### Specify custom Material Colors

By default, Smart Launcher tints monochrome icons using the same colors used by Pixel Launcher.

However, if you want Smart Launcher to use different colors you can instruct it to do so by declaring these two colors in your `res/values` file.

**Note:** These colors will be also used to tint fallback icons

```xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<resources>
   ...
   <color name="org.icontheme.icon_background_color">@color/my_background_color</color>
   <color name="org.icontheme.icon_color">@color/my_foreground_color</color>
   ...
</resources>
```

| When you define the colors | When you DON'T define the colors |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| <p><img src="/files/Alo7IqB5XnomrbLQqKmI" alt=""><br><br>All the icons will be tinted using the colors you choose.<br></p> | <p><img src="/files/TvaKJ9f16G72GiJInPSG" alt=""><br><br>Smart Launcher will pick the colors. If they don't match with colors in your icons, fallback icons may look different.</p> |

#### Summary:

✅ Specify the colors if you are using custom colors in your icons.\
✅ Don't specify the colors if you are ok with the launcher picking the colors for you.

***

### **Fallback to Themed icons**

**`org.icontheme.FALLBACK_TO_THEMED_ICON`**

Enable this flag to instruct the launcher to use [Themed Icons](https://proandroiddev.com/android-13-implementing-themed-icons-into-your-app-e7002f2c4e04) for the icons not covered by your icon pack.

| With the flag | Without the flag |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| <p><img src="/files/OuelkFwZuKYW3GrH5P6q" alt="" data-size="original"><br>Apps whose icons are not included in your icon pack will be skinned as Themed icons.</p> | <p><img src="/files/7aEGRYHm0Ri0FXy6lY3p" alt="" data-size="original"><br>Apps whose icons are not included in your icon pack will retain their original appearance.</p> |

We recommend enabling this flag only if your icons have a visual appearance that complements Android 13 Themed Icons when mixed together.

**Please note:** In order for this to work, you must not provide in your theme any mask, back, overlay, scalefactor or icon shader.

**Summary:**

✅ Include this flag, unless you really believe unskinned icons looks better than the ones automatically created by Smart Launcher.

# KLWP/KWGT APIs

KLWP and KWGT are two apps by the Kustom team that let you create live wallpapers and custom widgets, perfectly complementing Smart Launcher.

## Current status

At the moment there are no known issues between Smart Launcher and Kustom apps.

Our goal is to guaranteeing the best possible experience with Kustom apps, so if you have suggestions or request feel free to contact us.

## Interacting with Smart Launcher from Kustom apps

### Get the current Smart Launcher page

While using KLWP/KWGT you can check the current Smart Launcher page by using the formula `$br(smartlauncher, screen)$` in the formula editor. Refer to the table below for the meaning of each code.

| Screen name                              | Code |
| ---------------------------------------- | ---- |
| Default home page                        | `0`  |
| Home page different from the default one | `4` |
| App page                                 | `1`  |
| Search page                              | `2`  |
| News page                                | `3`  |

### Get the launcher palette

Smart Launcher provides its color palette as variables, enabling you to create setups that seamlessly integrate with the launcher UI and widgets. For example, you can set the color of a KLWP text element to `$br(smartlauncher, on-wallpaper-color)$` to ensure it fits perfectly with the rest of the interface.

<table><thead><tr><th>Variable name</th><th>Explanation</th><th>Example</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><pre><code>on-wallpaper-color
</code></pre></td><td>Used for items directly placed on the wallpaper.<br>E.g: Icon labels</td><td><img src="/files/1q1qzAnLhOBXhFp1xnvm" alt="" data-size="original"></td></tr><tr><td><pre><code>surface-color
</code></pre></td><td>Used to tint surfaces placed on the wallpaper.<br>E.g. Widgets background</td><td><img src="/files/GndgfxYqqU1xirw6RnZT" alt="" data-size="original"></td></tr><tr><td><pre><code>on-surface-color
</code></pre></td><td>Used for items placed on surfaces.<br>E.g. Text in widgets (100%)</td><td><img src="/files/GndgfxYqqU1xirw6RnZT" alt="" data-size="original"></td></tr><tr><td><pre><code>accent-color
</code></pre></td><td>Used for highlighted items.<br>E.g. The category bar indicator</td><td><img src="/files/lAQaf8CyNmABd5QKxfYA" alt="" data-size="original"></td></tr></tbody></table>

Please note that the variable names do not match the color names used in Smart Launcher. We chose these variable names to align with the naming convention adopted by the [Niagara Team](https://help.niagaralauncher.app/article/59-klwp-integration), aiming to create a unified experience for Kustom creators.

# Wallpaper APIs

### Overview

The Smart Launcher Wallpaper API is an Android library that lets third‑party apps notify Smart Launcher about the wallpaper a user has selected. It handles temporary file storage, permission management, and metadata sharing so you can integrate without additional manifest setup or custom providers.

### Benefits for Developers

* **Advanced visual effect** – Smart Launcher will be able to apply dynamic blur effects and other enhancements to the wallpapers you supply, ensuring the launcher showcases your content at its best.

### Quick Implementation Guide

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**Add the dependency**

```kotlin
dependencies {
    implementation("net.smartlauncher:wallpaper-api:0.0.5")
}
```

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Go to the code that you use to apply your wallpapers**

First apply the wallpaper with `WallpaperManager`, then notify Smart Launcher with `SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.updateWallpaper`. This requires Smart Launcher **6.5.54 or later**.

```kotlin
// Both calls are usually made from a background thread, for example from a coroutine.
yourCoroutineScope.launch(Dispatchers.IO) {
    WallpaperManager.getInstance(this@MainActivity).setBitmap(bitmap)
    // You can already tell the user that the new wallpaper has been applied.
    val result = SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.updateWallpaper(
        context = this@MainActivity,
        bitmap = bitmap, // also Uri is supported
        which = WallpaperManager.FLAG_SYSTEM,
        metadata = SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.Metadata(
            author = "Jane Doe",
            link = "https://example.com/wallpaper/42",
            source = "Example App"
        )
    )
    // Useful for debugging
    Log.d(TAG, "SmartLauncherWallpaperAPI returned $result")
}
```

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**You are done!**
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Recommendations and common errors

✅ Run `WallpaperManager.setBitmap(...)` and `SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.updateWallpaper(...)` from a background thread, for example from a coroutine. They do not need to run on the same thread or the same coroutine scope, but `updateWallpaper(...)` must happen after the wallpaper has already been applied.

✅ After `WallpaperManager.setBitmap(...)` returns, you can already tell the user that the new wallpaper has been applied.

✅ You do not need to wait for `SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.updateWallpaper(...)` to return. You can launch it separately on another background thread if that fits your app better.

❌ **Do not call** `SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.updateWallpaper` before `WallpaperManager.getInstance(this).setBitmap(bitmap)`. Calling it first will not have any effect on the current wallpaper.

❌ If you are applying your wallpaper only to the lock screen, **do not call** `updateWallpaper`. Otherwise, your information will again be associated with the wrong wallpaper.

### **How to test it**

1. Verify you are running Smart Launcher 6.5.54 or higher
2. Launch your code, ensure **`SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.updateWallpaper` returns `Success`**
3. From Smart Launcher, open preferences, then select **Show your home screen**.

✅ If you see your current setup, the integration is working! Now, if you populated the metadata field, you should see them as part of the body text when you press the **Share** button.

🚨 If you get an error after selecting **Show your home screen**, something is wrong. Contact us for assistance.

### Library release notes

**0.0.5**

Breaking change: `SmartLauncherWallpaperApi.updateWallpaper` replaces the previous `saveWallpaper` method.

The new flow is to apply the wallpaper first with `WallpaperManager.setBitmap(...)`, then call `updateWallpaper(...)` afterwards. This unlocks the caller earlier because you do not need to postpone the wallpaper application until you receive the return value.

**0.0.4**

The library now uses WebP under the hood for improved performance

**0.0.3**

Initial public release

# Third-Party Widget Devs APIs

This page explains the protocol that allows third-party widget developers to include their widget configurations in Smart Launcher backups and restores.

### Introduction

Smart Launcher backups usually include the configuration of the launcher itself and its widgets. By using the protocol described here, your widget configuration will also be saved and restored when users create or restore a backup. This improves the user experience and ensures that widget data is retained after device resets or migrations.

### How it works

The protocol relies on a custom `ContentProvider` that you implement in your app. This provider gives Smart Launcher a way to export and import your widget configuration data. Smart Launcher will:

1. Call your provider to export widget configuration data whenever a backup is created.
2. Call your provider to import widget configuration data whenever a user restores a backup.

### What you need to do

1. **Implement the BackupContentProvider**\
   Create a class in your project extending `BackupContentProvider` (see code below) and implement the abstract methods `exportWidgetConfig` and `importWidgetConfig`. These methods handle the actual reading and writing of widget configuration data.<br>
2. **Register the provider in your Manifest**\
   Add your `BackupContentProvider` to your AndroidManifest.xml. Make sure to use an authority that follows this pattern:\
   `<your_package_name>.widgetConfigProvider`\
   For example:

   ```xml
   <provider
       android:name=".MyBackupContentProvider"
       android:authorities="${applicationId}.widgetConfigProvider"
       android:exported="true" />
   ```
3. **Implement the exportWidgetConfig method**\
   In `exportWidgetConfig(appWidgetId: Int)`, read the current configuration of the specified widget and write it to a file (for example a temporary file in your app's files directory). You can use JSON, ZIP, or any format you like. Consider including a version number in the exported file so future updates can keep compatibility. If your configuration includes sensitive data, encrypt it before returning the file.<br>
4. **Implement the importWidgetConfig method**\
   In `importWidgetConfig(file: File, appWidgetId: Int)`, read back the configuration from the file created by the export step. Decrypt if necessary. Then apply the configuration to the widget identified by `appWidgetId`. This ensures that after the user restores their backup, the widget returns to the previous configuration.<br>
5. **Update your code when configuration format changes**\
   Over time your widget configuration format might evolve. Keep the versioning of the exported data in mind and ensure your import method can still handle older versions. This provides a smoother experience for users restoring backups that were created with older versions of your app.

### The BackupContentProvider class

Below is the `BackupContentProvider` base class. Add it to your project and extend it. You only need to override `exportWidgetConfig` and `importWidgetConfig` to handle your widget's data.

```kotlin
import android.content.ContentProvider
import android.content.ContentValues
import android.content.Context
import android.content.UriMatcher
import android.database.Cursor
import android.net.Uri
import android.os.ParcelFileDescriptor
import android.util.Log
import java.io.File
import java.io.IOException
import java.io.InputStream
### Testing your implementation
1. Install your app with the `BackupContentProvider`.
2. Configure a widget and verify that it works properly.
3. Launch a Smart Launcher backup and restore process.
4. Confirm that after restoring the backup, the widget configuration is the same as before.
If everything is correct, users will never lose their widget configuration when they switch devices, reinstall the launcher, or reset their device.
# Icon Pack Studio FAQ
## Usage
### Why do I need a launcher to apply icon packs created with Icon Pack Studio?
Every Android device is distributed with a built-in launcher. However, built-in launchers generally do not provide support for icon packs. If your built-in launcher does not support the icon pack format used by Icon Pack Studio, then you won't be able to use any of the icon packs created or downloading using Icon Pack Studio.
The problem can be solved by downloading a third party launcher from Play Store. Third party launchers provide extra features and in some cases, they can also improve your device resources usage.
### Can I use Icon Pack Studio with my launcher?
Although the Icon Pack Studio currently on the Play Store only supports Smart Launcher, we developed another version of Icon Pack Studio to support most launchers. Check more here:
{% endcontent-ref %}
## License
### I purchased an Fx pack in IPS 1.0, can I use the same effects in IPS 2.0?
Yes, you can use the effects you purchased and all the new ones added with the update. You don't need to pay any extra.
### **I want a refund, for reasons…**
Please use fill this [**form**](https://goo.gl/forms/gwJYFsH4LgpZNTCh1) to request a refund. Our team will review your request and will consider your eligibility to get a refund. As described in our [**Terms Of Service**](https://www.smartlauncher.net/terms), all refunds will be at our sole discretion.
## The community
### Someone is publishing their creation using my name
You don't need an account to post your creation in the Icon Pack Studio community so nicknames are not uniquely linked to an account. This may change in future versions of Icon Pack Studio.
### Someone is publishing my creation using their names
This happens for the same reason as above. If you see this happening just use the button report to let us know about a problem. We will hopefully solve the problem in future versions.
## Other questions
### I don't like Icon Pack Studio, I want to restore by device to its previous state
Just uninstall Icon Pack Studio. If you installed a launcher in order to use IPS, uninstall the launcher too.
### My antivirus says Icon Pack Studio contains can be harmful to my device/contains a virus. What should I do?
Change antivirus app! Our most precious resource is the trust of our users we would never ruin our work with viruses or any other kind of malware.
Icon Pack Studio allows exporting icon packs in the APK format. In order to do that, Icon Pack Studio includes the resources necessary to generate an APK at runtime. A few simple antivirus apps misrecognize this as an attempt to hide a virus and report Icon Pack Studio as malware.
APKs exported by Icon Pack Studio consist just of a collection of icons, they do not require ANY permission, they cannot access any device data and they cannot even trasmit data using the network.<br>
# Icon Pack Studio Launcher Support
Support for 3rd party is limited because of the Google Play Store policy
<details>
<summary>More Details About What Happened</summary>
In October 2022, Google [changed its policies](https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/12085295) to forbid most apps on the Play Store from installing APKs. This has forced us to limit the functionality of our app, Icon Pack Studio (IPS), which previously used this capability to generate installable icon packs.
Since all the most popular launchers on the Play Store accept only icon packs in the APK format, it is now impossible for IPS to support any other launcher except Smart Launcher, which features a native implementation.
We contacted Google for a solution, but we never received a final response. As a result, we had no choice but to release a version of Icon Pack Studio that does not allow users to export icon packs in the APK format.
</details>
## How to Continue Using Icon Pack Studio <a href="#how-to-continue-using-icon-pack-studio" id="how-to-continue-using-icon-pack-studio"></a>
There are 2 options available to continue using Icon Pack Studio:
1. Change your launcher to [**Smart Launcher**](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ginlemon.flowerfree)**,** which is developed by our team. This option is **recommended** as it provides the best possible experience with Icon Pack Studio.
2. Install [**Icon Pack Studio Exporter**](https://www.iconpackstudio.com/IPSExporter)**,** a plugin app that restores the ability to export icon packs created from Icon Pack Studio. This will allow you to continue using Icon Pack Studio with any of the previously [supported](/other-products/iconpackstudiofaq/icon-pack-studio-launcher-support/supported-launcher) launchers.
{% hint style="info" %}
**Icon Pack Studio Exporter** only works with genuine versions of **Icon Pack Studio**.
{% endhint %}
We want to express our gratitude to all of our users for their continued support and understanding during this time.
In the meantime, we encourage our users to stay tuned for updates and to continue exploring the many features that Icon Pack Studio has to offer.
# Supported launchers
## Can I use Icon Pack Studio with my launcher?
Starting from September 2023, there are now two versions of Icon Pack Studio available:
1. **Play Store Version**\
   Restricted to only work with Smart Launcher
2. **Universal Version**\
   Supports all the launchers supported by the pre-2023 versions of IPS
For more information about the changes that led to this, please refer to this [**article**](/other-products/iconpackstudiofaq/icon-pack-studio-launcher-support).
## Will Icon Pack Studio Universal Work With My Launcher?
Icon Pack Studio Universal has been designed to work with any launcher. However, in order to use your icon packs with your launcher, your launcher needs to support the Icon Pack Studio format, which is one of the most common icon pack formats in the Android market.
If your launcher is listed as not compatible, we apologize but we cannot fix the problem. Only your launcher developer can solve it.
If your launcher is not in the list, it means it has not been tested with Icon Pack Studio. It may work, but we cannot guarantee it.<br>
### For Nova (or other launchers) users
This example is taken from Nova, but other launchers should offer a similar experience. Please note that the ability to change individual icons may not be available in some launchers; that's not something we control.
1. Perform a long press on the icon you want to change. Select "Edit", then tap the big app icon.\
   \
   ![](/files/46sqJzyEHejrJPzuTSdy)<br>
2. Select "Icon Pack Studio" then press the icon in the top right corner.\
   \
   ![](/files/7NFtlhELOkECPF2pJ0q2)<br>
3. Now select the app for which you want to create a new icon\
   \
   ![](/files/pJtj3m5BljvqbKADwnJo)
## Edit the icon
1. Pick the style you want to use as the base for the new icon or create a new one.\
   \
   ![](/files/q7brENtYLOMFVUZYNKmZ)<br>
2. You can now edit any details of your icon, you can also pick a new icon from a file (look into Logo > Design). For example, we will edit the background stroke.\
   \
   ![](/files/AATbYTLb3GEZZV0lCuzy)<br>
3. When you are happy with the result, just tap done and see the result on your home screen.\
   \
   ![](/files/itt7RMhWZCm1h3bKoHYe)\ <br>
# Compositing options
**Compositing** is the process or technique of combining visual elements from separate sources into single images. Icon Pack Studio provides 5 different compositing modes.
## **Overlap**
![](/files/-MUerCLLYu7Io9QubE-N)
The overlap method is the **standard compositing mode**. Shape B is just placed on top of Shape A.\
If Shape B is translucent, you will see part of Shape A under the area occupied by Shape B.<br>
## **Printed on**
![](/files/-MUerIXzcdyGmPkvuBn5)
This mode is similar to overlap, but the area of the Shape B that exceeds the borders of Shape A are not drawn. If Shape B is translucent, you will see part of Shape A under the area occupied by Shape B.\
\
**Please note**: If Shape B is completely contained in the area of Shape A, Print on will work exactly like Overlap.
## **Engraved**
![](/files/-MUerKp3yxJS5X6VhU_u)
When Engraved is selected, Shape B is subtracted by Shape A, generating a hole in the picture on the bottom. In this case, the color of Shape B is ignored.
## **Overwrite**
When Overwrite is selected Shape B will replace the content of Shape A instead of overlapping it.\
If Shape B is translucent, you won't see Shape A under the area occupied by Shape B.
**Please note:** If Shape B is opaque, Overwrite will work exactly like Overlap.
## Icon Pack Studio 2.0
### The power of a community
The most important change in IPS 2.0 is the community tab. Here you can see other people creations and if you find something you like, you can download it and use it on your device.
### Single icon editing
Icon Pack Studio can create icon packs that fit all the apps on your device. Sometimes, however, you may want some extra customization for certain icons. With Icon Pack Studio 2.0, you will be able to give some extra touches to singular picked icons on your device.
### Import installed icon packs respecting intellectual property\*
With Icon Pack Studio 2.0 your Android icon packs become even more flexible. IPS 2.0 can import any installed icon pack allowing you to modifying them using the powerful IPS editor.
### Filters
Filters unlock a new world of possibilities in Icon Pack Studio. By applying a filter you will be able to give a total different feeling to your icon packs. Available filters includes color swap and inversion, monochromatic effects and color enhancement. Filters requires IPS Pro.
### Adaptive icons on any Android version
IPS 2.0 can now edit the icons in the adaptive icon format. Adaptive icons are customizable with lights, filters, perspective effects and shapes to create high quality icon packs.
### Gradients and color everywhere
Now you can color your icons using gradients and you can have colored shadows. The color picker has been redesigned to be more accurate and easier to use.
### Compatible with almost any launcher
Icon Pack Studio 2.0 has been tested to work with at least 16 of the most popular Android launchers and we are working with more developers to make their launchers compatible with IPS.
### More powerful, more accessible.
We redesigned all the UI of IPS to make it accessible to more people. Resizable preview, helpful descriptions and error prevention allow everyone to be build their own personal icon pack. Android 10 Gestures are fully supported.
# FAQ for launcher developers
### My launcher is listed in Icon Pack Studio as unsupported
This happens because your launcher does not support the Icon Pack Studio format.
Icon Pack Studio exports user creations using one of the most common icon pack formats in Android.
If your launcher supports icon packs downloadable from the Google Play Store, it probably already supports Icon Pack Studio; you just need to ensure your launcher searches in the file `/res/raw/appfilter.xml` to resolve the icon resource IDs.
If you need assistance with this, or if you have already checked and want to report that your launcher is now compatible, just contact us at <support+dev@smartlauncher.net>
### How can I launch the Icon Pack Studio editor for a specific app from my launcher?
Just use this piece of code to launch the Icon Pack Studio editor.
```
val intent = Intent("android.intent.action.PICK")
intent.setPackage("ginlemon.iconpackstudio")
intent.putExtra("packagename", <app packagename>)
intent.putExtra("activityname", <app activityname>)
intent.putExtra("userid", <app userId or -1>)
startActivityForResult(intent, YOUR_REQUEST_CODE)
```
If you need assistance with this, or if you already checked and you want to report your launcher is now compatible, just contact us at <support+dev@smartlauncher.net>
# FAQ for icon pack developers
Information reserved to icon pack developers.
### I noticed some users downloaded my icon pack after using Icon Pack Studio...
Probably those users discovered your icon pack in Icon Pack Studio!\
\
Icon Pack Studio is a tool that makes icon packs more flexible and allows people to build and share their personal icon packs with other people.
If a user creation makes use of your icon pack, other people will have to install your icon pack before to be able to use that creation.
![](/files/-M4M6ELbUM7xr2tfahw8)
### Is Icon Pack Studio an alternative to Android icon packs?
No, that's never meant to be the goal of Icon Pack Studio. A set of algorithms can never replace the creativity of a digital artist. Icon Pack Studio has been designed to work together with other icon packs and make them more powerful and easier to discover.
### Can people use Icon Pack Studio to distribute unauthorized copies of my work?
No, we designed Icon Pack Studio as a tool for personal use only.\
\
Icon packs exported with Icon Pack Studio contain only the icons of the apps installed on the user's device (generally from 40 to 200 icons), making them useful only on the device where they have been built. We also took some precautions to ensure that APKs exported by Icon Pack Studio are not uploadable to the Play Store.\
\
Finally, users are explicitly forbidden from sharing the exported icon packs.
### I feel uncomfortable with this, can I prevent Icon Pack Studio to import my icon packs?
Yes sure, you just need to add a single line of code.
Before doing that, remember that by disallowing your users to import your icon pack you will stop receiving any benefits connected to IPS, like the possibility to have your icon packs featured in Icon Pack Studio.
Your users may appreciate the possibility to use your icon packs in Icon Pack Studio, are you sure this is something you would like to block?
This is the line of code you need to your icon pack manifest file:
```
<category android:name="ginlemon.iconpackstudio.DO_NOT_ALLOW_EDITING" />
```
Include the line of code inside any intent-filter block with action set to "android.intent.action.MAIN", like in the example below:
